No one should blame them because the middle of May is closer than most of us think. Students who have yet to order a test prep book for their AP subjects should stop reading, tab over, and order one online immediately. Students should also consider if they will be successful studying on their own or if they need help from an Orange County AP tutor. Additionally, students are advised to remember that theres a difference between taking an AP course and taking an AP test. Test preparation is a subject in and of itself and many students who perform well during an in-class essay or exam (without the ultimate stress of a make-it or break-it exam) may not necessarily perform well on the exam. There arent any second chances or do-overs when it comes to the real AP exam, which causes many AP students to suffer from run-of-the-mill, but no less distressing, test anxiety. One of the best ways to overcome fear of exams is to be well-prepared (READ: Last Minute AP Study Guide). April 1st to April 15th The first two weeks of April are an important time for students to dive straight in to their AP exam prep. Although many students will be on spring break for one of these weeks, they are advised to make a timeline of study before going off on vacation so that they can jump into their studies the minute they return home. Students who do not already have a test prep book or a tutor are advised to look into it straight away. A great way for a student to determine whether or not they need assistance from a tutor or study group is to take one of the full-length practice tests in their test booklet. Students are advised not to view their course grades or quizzes as a fully accurate reflection of their AP exam score because the actual exam is much longer and more stressful. Although many students thrive under pressure, most lose a few points here and there due to time constraints and nerves. April 15th to May 1st This is the time when students should tell their family and friends that theyll be spending most of their time studying at the library in a quiet environment. This two-week period can be a make-it or break-it situation for countless students across the country, thus this period of time should be highly focused. Although it may not seem like it, spending two weeks cracking the books is nothing compared to the entire year a student has been studying in an AP class at school. It’s important for students to remember that they need a minimum of a “3” on the AP exam in order to receive college credit (READ: Ask a Nerd! Mastering AP English). Its recommended that students take a full-length practice test at least once a week during this time. Students should work on their own, with their study group, or with their tutor anywhere between 4 10 hours a week between April 15th and May 1st. Students should also remember to communicate with their tutor as to which areas they are struggling with the most so that they can focus in on these particular areas as a team and allow for extra time for improvement. However, students should still review areas they are scoring high in so that these topics and concepts remain fresh in their minds. May 1st to May 15th (depending on the date of the actual exam) Students are advised to continue to develop their weakest points during this period but also begin to taper off their studies in order to be adequately rested for game day. The best things to focus on during this time are general review and test prep strategies. Students can work with their tutor to determine whether or not they are a skilled test-taker or if they need help with basic process of elimination and trick questions. Its also essential that students receive a minimum of eight hours of sleep the two or three days leading up to the exam. Additionally, they should be getting adequate exercise and nutrition that will aid in their mental concentration on exam day (READ: AP Test Without the Class?). Bottom line?? Because students have made a commitment to their AP classes since last August, it only makes sense for them to follow an adequate test prep plan leading up to their May AP exams. Practice makes perfect and test prep strategies can aid greatly in the success of the exam. Maintaining a positive attitude and keeping an eye on the big picture will help students get through long homework sessions and deal with long-term study tasks like prepping for the SAT or advanced placement exams. 4. Make a priority list At some point, every students concentration will wane, and their quality of work will decline rapidly. Unfortunately, for those of us who struggle with the concepts that most students learn in high school, our regents review can seem far less eventful.To be fair, everyone has a different approach to the lessons that are the most important in science courses, and when you think about it, chemistry regents will be no different. Even so, if you're not making good progress, it's time to consider ways to speed up your work.First of all, don't try to think that you need to go back and re-read material that was covered in class. The best way to get things moving is to look at what you're already learning, and then see what else you could do with it. Do some research on topics that interest you, or make a list of things that you want to learn more about.Second, look at what you're already doing. If you 're studying in class, keep track of where your notes and assignments are and look over them. When you're doing homework, pick a book or lesson plan that's easiest for you and start with it.Third, be sure to use your study materials. If you're just using a book as a supplement, don't assume that everything that you've learned in that book will be transferable to the classes that you take in college.Finally, if you can't do something you want to do, don't worry about it. Last year, NPR ran an April Fools story on the so-called Porsafillo Preschool Academy, a fictional school taking drastic measures to ensure the quality of the students they admitted. What was so interesting about the piece, entitled, N.Y. Preschool Starts DNA Testing for Admission, was that it resembled a real NPR report more than an article fromThe Onion.In other words, weve gotten to a point in education where helicopter moms and achievement crazed dads are more the norm thanwellnormal people. So, any talk about getting kids involved earlier in the college preparation process will justifiably raise a few eyebrows. Here, though, were not concerned about success, performance, or prestige, but exposure. And, the project of exposing middle school students to academic activities is only intended for them to better identify their strengths and goals. This exposure comes in a number of ways, but today well be speaking about the three Cs of academic activities:Competitions,Camps,and Creative Projects. Lets start withcompetitions, since these are the easiest to both find and explain. Even further, competitions are fun activitiesfor competitive kids. A timid 7thgrader probably wont develop as well with competitions, but some students thrive in that environment. Not surprisingly, the most well organized competitions come in science and mathematics fields. First and foremost among these is Science Olympiad, which might sound intimidating. However, at this level the 6ththrough 9thgrade Division B where kids compete on everything from tree identification to traditional egg drops, its mostly a lot of fun. The same can be said for MathCounts, the math version of Science Olympiad. MathCounts provides guidelines for setting up clubs, interesting projects for teachers, and activities for students, as well as both individual and team competitions. In both cases, check with your middle school to see if they have a team. For kids who arent necessarily competitive and even for those who are campsare a great resource. But, the difficult part about camps is that new ones pop up annually, and its hard to determine quality. There are two, though, that are generally well respected: CTY and EPGY. CTY, the Center for Talented Youth, provides both online and residential programs, and has run for over 30 years. The program is administered by Johns Hopkins University, but held at various locations across the country, all offering courses in the humanities, math, writing, and science. CTY tends to be selective, and students qualify largely based on standardized test scores. The Education Program for Gifted Youth, or EPGY, is Stanfords version of CTY, hosting two-week sessions in computer programming, writing, the natural sciences, and so forth. Unlike CTY, EPGY is held only at one location, Stanford, so this is somewhat restrictive. On the other hand, the range of acceptable tests for admission is far larger than that of CTY. In either case, both programs are intense, fun, and well respected. Even further, theyre great springboards to more advanced programs in high school. But, competitions can be stressful and residential camps arent for everyone, so why not just build your own program? TheseCreative Projectsentail activities that arent quite as self-contained as competitions and camps, so putting such a program together is difficult. But it can be done! Take, for instance, the 8thgrader who has shown signs of entrepreneurship. She wont find too many competitions that fit her, and classes could be a little too hands off. Still, she could build a nice summer through bundling together different, related activities. Our student would begin with Junior Achievement, or JA, a national non-profit organization with the mission of getting kids financially literate. Attending business workshops and skill building sessions for young entrepreneurs are great ways to explore business, a complex field that JA makes accessible. The summer would continue with involvement in a Toastmasters youth program. Another established non-profit, Toastmasters is a wonderful way for people of any age to expose themselves to training in public speaking and leadership. To finish up the summer, she could spend a few days shadowing professionals in finance, accounting, or marketing. Quite a few companies have established programs that offer a day of job shadowing for teens. Even organizations that dont have such policies are worth contacting; its probable that theyve never before had a request. The summer is built for younger students to get exposed to academics in a way theyve never done before usually in a way thats hands-on, active, and fun. The most painful part of the process is the planning, which there can be a whole lot of. Even though were only in March, ensure that the summer will be productive and enjoyable. Except in the workplace. At work, opinions are terrifying. At work, a controversial opinion can lead to you to be disliked, it can harm your reputation and even leave you vulnerable to losing your job. For that reason, even those of us who are confident and assertive in our personal lives, end up falling victim to workplace passivity; sitting in meetings, keeping schtum when our boss says something we completely disagree with. Although remaining silent can seem like the easier option in the moment, the inability to voice an opinion can be harmful to your organisation and detrimental to your own career in the long run. To illustrate this, here are five things that happen when you DON’T speak your mind at work, to make you think twice next time someone asks “What do you think?” 1. You Will Lose Respect If you continually agree with all decisions and ideas in the workplace, you will be viewed as apathetic. You will lose the respect of your colleagues and superiors and they will eventually stop asking for your thoughts. A person who voices an opinion even a contrasting one, stands out and automatically demands authority. Although this kind of behaviour is usually down to one or two individuals, when many people notice victimisation and fail to make a stand, every witness becomes passively complicit. 3. If you have a creative thought with lots of potential but hold back in fear of looking foolish, your overall organisation won’t have the chance to try new things and move forward. 4. You Will Lose Your Sense Of Self Your opinions form your personality and who you are at your very core. If you are afraid to voice them, you will begin to question your integrity and lose sight of your moral compass. This lack of self-confidence can impact your mental health by increasing anxiety levels and therefore affect your overall performance at work. Even if voicing your opinion has a negative outcome, you will be able to stand back and know that despite it all, you have been true to yourself. 5. You Won’t learn Being agreeable seems like an easy way to keep all risks low.
